Over the past ten years, as Dr. Wu shifted his career from working for large companies to doing things that he really wanted to do (e.g. teach, consult, train, volunteer, and make a difference), he started publishing articles and books. This article highlights some of the recent publications.

As a part of projectmanagement.co‘s mission to promote and advance project managements, books published by iExperi Press is available for free on Amazon Kindle on selective days, typically during the beginning of school semesters. This way, students can access them for free.  Please check below for the exact dates.

Books

Optimizing Project Management, May 2020, CRC Press

Amazon Rating:   5 stars*
Cost:                        $40-$50

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy), Barnes and Noble, VitalSource (eBook), and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: Based on over a decade of teaching and training, I wrote this book as an easy to understand guide to project management. It’s written as a quasi-text book and quasi-business book.  Most importantly, this book contains a 38 page case study.  Through the use of this and other case studies, the goal is to make the content real, relevant, and lively.  An alternative goal was to publish a lower-cost, high quality, project management text book.  I deliberately negotiated with the publisher to keep the cost of the book low.

Important: This book may be available for free from your university’s library. Check with your library before purchasing.

Sensible Guide to a Career in Project Management (2016 Edition), April 2016, iExperi Press

Amazon Rating:                      4.3 stars*
Cost:                                          $2.99 – $16.99
Free on Amazon Kindle:      3/13/24 and 3/20/24

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: By 2016, I have been teaching project management for nearly a decade.  During this period, I have probably taught (and trained) over 1,000 students and trainees.  This book attempts to present how professionals start in project management, how to grow once they are project managers, and where to go as they become experts and executives. To illustrate the professional growth, the book presented a conceptual and realistic career path, which incidentally mapped closely to the author’s career.

Sensible Guide to Key Terminologies in Project Management: Featuring the 500 Most Commonly Used Words, November 2019, iExperi Press

Amazon Rating:                      4.2 stars*
Cost:                                          $8.99 – $12.99
Free on Amazon Kindle:      3/6/24, 3/13/24, 3/20/24

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: Brian and I wrote this book because we found so many inconsistencies in the basic use of key project management terms. Lexicon is foundational, and without a common understanding, communication becomes difficult.  This book highlights 500 common terms in project management.

Implementing Project Portfolio Management, October 2018, Project Management Institute

Amazon Rating:   4.1 stars*
Cost:                        $30-$35

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: As one of the two lead editors for this book, we worked with a talented team of seven other portfolio management professionals. All of us were on PMI’s core committee for portfolio management. As a part of updating the Standard for Portfolio Management, 4th Edition, we develop a large amount of high quality content, especially on “how to…” materials, that were not included in the standard.  Thus, we worked collaboratively over the next 12 month to create this Companion Guide to the Standard.

Making Choices: Aligning Strategic Business Execution with Strategy through Portfolio Management, November 2019, iExperi Press

Amazon Rating:    3.8 stars*
Cost:                        $9.99 – $19.99

Free on Amazon Kindle: 5/6/24 – 5/7/24

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: This was the first time Brian and I collaborated on a book.  As trainers, we often chat about how to make knowledge “stick”.  We agreed to adopt a storytelling approach to make our portfolio management training courses more relevant and memorable.  We tortured ourselves over the detail as we created “firestorms” reflecting situations in our career.  Perhaps more importantly, we also developed a multi-cultural list of characters, especially the leading characters, in hope to move our profession toward greater diversity.  This is a great book for those who are interested in project portfolio management and want to get a tastes of a “day in the life” of a portfolio manager.

Sensible Guide to Passing the PfMP Exam: Including 400 Practice Exams Questions, June 2014, iExperi Press

Amazon Rating:  4.1 stars*
Cost:                            $49.99 – $59.99

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: This was first book, born out of frustration with a lack of good study materials for some of the advanced Project Management Institute certifications.  The book provides a new approach to help readers prepare for the Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP®) examination. The approach is based on the Socratic method of asking the right questions and encourage the reader to develop the optimal mindset for the exam. While the Star Rating is perhaps the lowest of my publications, I am particularly proud of this book because 1) It’s the highest rating of the PfMP Exam Preparation Book, and 2) The relatively low rating of all the books show the difficulty of finding the best approach for people to learn.  The book remains relevant and up to date.  Since the originally publishing, there had been period updates to reflect the latest trends in the PfMP exam.

The Sensible Guide to Program Management Professional (PgMP)® Success, July 2021, Taylor & Francis

Amazon Rating:    4.1 stars
Cost:                        $69.99

Available: Amazon (Kindle and Hard copy) and other fine booksellers

Author’s Remark: The primary goal of this book is to help the aspiring program managers to pass the Program Management Professional (PgMP®) certification exam by explaining the core concepts, providing 400 exam questions including two full practice tests, and helping the reader to develop a test taking strategy that works. Written by the CEO of PMO Advisory, which has a record of 99.5% first time pass rate, this book can be an indispensable resource for all serious professionals pursuing the PgMP credential.
